Four Doppler radar centres would be set up in different parts of Orissa to track the formation and the movement of cyclones, State Revenue Minister Suryanarayan Patro said here today.
The Minister said the Doppler radar would be set up at Paradeep, Gopalpur, Sambalpur and Balasore to provide information to the people about the cyclone in advance.
While the Union government would provide the equipment, the state government would give the infrastructure needed for setting up of the radars, he said.
Mr Patro said land for setting up of the radars had already been alloted and construction started in all the four places. These would be completed within the next six months,he added.
The Minister said the government had requested the Union government to construct 150 multipurpose cyclone centres in the state.
The state government,he said, had planned to construct a cyclone centre at every one km difference along the 480 km long coast. So far as many as 203 cyclone centres had been completed.
Out of the 203 such centres, while the World Bank had constructed 37, as many as 60 centres were constructed from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, 41 from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and 65 by the Red Cross, Mr Patro said.
