Girl attempts suicide after rebuke for speaking in Assamese

Guwahati, Feb 1 (IANS) A Class 8 girl student of an English medium school in this Assam city Guwahati Monday attempted suicide by jumping from the second floor of the institution, alleging humiliation and punishment by teachers for speaking in Assamese.
Teenaged Nabanita Das is now in the intensive care unit of a city hospital with back and limb injuries, although doctors said she was out of danger.

The girl said she was immensely humiliated by the vice-principal of the Gurukul Grammar Higher Secondary School for speaking in Assamese with some of her friends inside the school premises.

“I was punished by my vice-principal – asked to kneel down outside, then I was asked to write down in English 1,000 times that I would never speak in Assamese again. Also I was asked to learn English from Class 1 students….I felt so humiliated in front of my friends that I decided to end my life by jumping from the second floor of the school,” Nabanita told journalists from her hospital bed.

Parents and relatives complained that the school authorities behaved rudely with them when they went to enquire about the incident.

“No teachers cooperated with us and refused to say anything about how the incident took place. The security guards present in the school simply tried shoving us out from the campus as if we are criminals,” Gautam Das, elder brother of Nabanita, told IANS.

School authorities refrained to make any comments on the incident.

A guardian said: “We were simply shocked and stunned by this incident of a teacher forcing a student to take this extreme step.

CPM leader Jyoti Basu dies

Former chief minister of West Bengal and veteran communist leader of India, Jyoti Basu, breathed his last on Sunday. Announcing his death, CPI (M) state secretary Biman Bose, said that Basu passed away at 11: 47 am. The 95-year-old communist leader was admitted at a private nursing home in Kolkata on January 1 with mildly severe pneumonia.
Jyoti Basu: 1914-2010
His condition deteriorated steadily and he was put on ventilation on January 6. His lungs stopped functioning a few days later. He developed multi organ dysfunction. Senior political leaders from all over the country, including the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, visited Basu during the last 17 days. His condition continued to deteriorate and dialysis was done since the last three days.
On Saturday night, Basu’s heart rate dropped abnormally and a temporary pace maker had to be placed to keep his heart functioning. Doctors had gathered at the hospital on Saturday night itself. Basu was to undergo dialysis on Sunday. But on Sunday morning, doctors decided that Basu was not in a condition to undergo dialysis. Basu’s body is being taken to Peace Haven where it would be kept for today. The CPI (M) state secretariat will meet at 6 pm today to decide about how to pay last homage to Basu on Monday and Tuesday.
All the national leaders of the CPI (M) including party secretary Prakash Karat, rushed to the hospital on Sunday morning. Basu had donated his eyes and body.
Earlier Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital where Basu was being treated. “I respect him as a senior polititian. We have stopped all party programs for the next three days. I demand three days of official mourning,” Mamata said.
Born on July 8, 1914, he was the chief minister of Bengal between June 21, 1977 to November 6, 2000.

Three of family killed for witchcraft in Ranchi

Three members of a family, including a married daughter, were hacked to death on the outskirts of Ranchi Sunday allegedly for practising black magic, police said.
Jhirghi Khakha, 63, was killed along with his wife Soma Khakha and 35-year-old married daughter Phulo by a group of villagers Sunday morning. “A group of villagers barged into Jhirghi’s house and dragged the family members to the fields, where they were hacked to death,” a police official told IANS.
The incident took place at Saugad Bustee under Tupudana police station, around 25 km from Ranchi.
The villagers alleged Jhirgi was an ‘ojha’ (exorcist). A girl who was under his treatment had died last month, inviting the wrath of her parents and relatives. They branded Jhirgi as a witch who practised black magic and caused the death of the girl.
To avenge the death of the girl, Jhirgi, his wife and daughter were beaten with sticks and rods and later hacked to death with axes.
Police have arrested three people in this connection.

Three people, including two tribal separatists, were killed in Assam

Three people, including two tribal separatists, were killed and three civilians wounded in a shootout by unidentified gunmen in Assam, officials said Sunday.
A police spokesperson said heavily armed masked gunmen late Saturday attacked a group of people at village Mukuldang in Kokrajhar district, about 220 km west of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.
“The gunmen entered the village and opened indiscriminate firing on a group of people in which two NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland) militants belonging to the ceasefire group and a daily wage earner were killed,” a police officer said.
Three other locals were injured in the attack.
“We are investigating into the incident and so far we have no clue,” the officer said.
The gunmen fled the area on motorcycles immediately after the attack.
The NDFB pro-talk faction have accused the now disbanded Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) of carrying out the attack.
“This is nothing but fratricidal attacks on our members by the ex-BLT,” B. Sudem, NDFB pro-talk leader, said.
The ex-BLT denied the charges.
A faction of the NDFB headed by Gobinda Basumatary entered into a ceasefire in 2005, while another group led by guerrilla leader Ranjan Daimary is waging a war for independence for the Bodo tribal people.
Fratricidal clashes between the NDFB and the ex-BLT have claimed more than 50 lives in the past two years in western Assam.
